Did you ever have something you thought was going to be one way turn out just the opposite? That is exactly what happened to me with this year’s Piccolo Spoleto.
Every year, for the past 20 years, I have done the design work for the festival program, brochures, ads, posters and much, much more. In 2013, the festival had 700 events and required an incredible amount of time and effort. Perhaps, more than was actually necessary, because I tended to be a tad obsessive about it. I mean, after all, this is the biggest event of the year for Charleston, a city that prides itself on extraordinary events.
I wanted the marketing collateral material to not just be visually appealing but it had to be perfect in every way — layout, content, editing, proof reading. I confess to losing more than a few nights sleep during the months it took to pull it all together!
This year the decision (and new realities) was made to let someone else take on this project. I knew it was the right choice for me, but I was really afraid that I was going to miss it, and I do in many ways. Several other projects have filled my schedule — some of which actually keep me awake at night as well.
Of course, I knew that I was going to be doing the design work for the Spotlight Concerts Series for this year’s Piccolo Spoleto. I’m very proud of how that’s turned out and I love working with Ellen Dressler Moryl, Spotlight Concert Series Artistic Director and Founding Director of the Piccolo Spoleto Festival.
They say that you can’t have your cake and eat it too but, in this case,”you can!”
